A Message from your MP
Dear Neighbours and Friends,
I want to start by saying thank you. I am deeply honoured to continue serving as your Member of Parliament for Vancouver Granville, and I am truly grateful for the trust and support you’ve placed in me once again.
None of this would have been possible without the incredible efforts of our volunteers, supporters, and community members who stood with me throughout the journey.
Over the past few weeks, I’ve had the opportunity to connect with many of you at events across the community — from celebrating graduations and Canada Day, to joining the Douglas Park Community Day, Greek Day on Broadway, and the eye-dotting ceremony to kick off the Dragon Boat Festival. It’s been a joy to celebrate our community’s vibrancy and strength!
My team and I are hard at work. We’re focused on the key priorities that matter most: making our neighbourhoods safer, addressing housing affordability, and creating opportunity for all.
At a time when Canada faces real threats from rising global instability to economic uncertainty, we’re taking bold action to protect and support Canadians.
We’ve introduced a middle-class tax cut to help people keep more of what they earn. We launched the Canada Strong Pass so that families can enjoy all that Canada has to offer at little or no cost.
Additionally, we’re advancing the One Canadian Economy initiative that focuses on building prosperity for everyone, in every region of the country.
Thank you again for your continued trust. I’ll keep working hard for you, every step of the way.
Sincerely,
Taleeb Noormohamed, MP
Vancouver Granville
What is Happening in Parliament?
Bill C-2: Strong Borders Act
Bill C-2, the Canada Strong Borders Act, delivers on what Canadians have asked for: safe streets, tackling auto theft, money laundering, and organized crime.
Securing the Border
Measures that protect the integrity of Canada’s immigration system and asylum application process. Giving border services officers better access to inspect exports, enhance information disclosures on sex offender travel, and a security mandate for the Canadian Coast Guard.
Combatting Organized Crime & Fentanyl
Amendments that will: allow for the search and seizure of mail with a general warrant, create a new temporary accelerated scheduling pathway for precursors, and provide authorities to enhance access to data in investigations by requiring electronic service providers maintain systems that support lawful access.
Disrupting Illicit Financing
Cracking down on money laundering and terrorist financing by providing for stronger penalties for financial crimes, introducing new requirements for large cash reporting, prohibiting third-party cash deposits, and adding FINTRAC to the Financial Institutions Supervisory Committee.
This bill strengthens our immigration system, modernizes information sharing, and improves the asylum process. This ensures fairness while protecting system integrity. It also empowers agencies like the RCMP and Coast Guard to better prevent drug smuggling, intercept child predators, and protect coastal communities.
To fight the fentanyl crisis, Bill C-2 gives law enforcement the power to seize illegal drugs and classify new substances quickly—cutting off supply before it harms our communities.
It also targets auto theft by allowing border agents to stop stolen vehicles from leaving the country, and it takes on financial crimes with tougher penalties and greater transparency.
Bill C-2 reflects the largest investment in border security in Canadian history—$1.3 billion—and a clear commitment to keeping Canadians safe while protecting their rights.
Bill C-5: One Canadian Economy
One of the most significant accomplishments this session was the passage of Bill C-5, the One Canadian Economy Act. This legislation lays the foundation for a stronger, more unified economy, one that creates good-paying jobs in every province and territory, invests in innovation, and ensures all Canadians benefit from growth, no matter where they live.
Advancing Nation-Building Projects
Projects will be evaluated in accordance with the following criteria:
Strengthen Canada’s autonomy, resilience and security
Provide economic or other benefits to Canada
Advance the interests of Indigenous peoples
Contribute to clean growth and to Canada’s objectives with respect to climate change
Removing Federal Barriers to Internal Trade
The act removes federal barriers to free trade within our borders, while protecting workers, the environment, and the health and safety of all Canadians. For Canadian businesses, this will make it easier to buy, sell and transport goods and services across the country.
Crucially, Bill C-5 affirms that full consultation with Indigenous communities is not optional, it’s essential. Building a fair and resilient economy must include meaningful collaboration with Indigenous leaders across the country. Projects will undergo impact assessment and be reviewed by existing regulators to identify the conditions that are necessary to protect Canadians, the environment, and the rights of Indigenous peoples.
By closing economic gaps between regions and responding strategically to global challenges like the U.S. tariff war, C-5 positions us to build a bigger, stronger, and more united Canada — Canada Strong.
GST Relief for First-Time Homebuyers
As part of our ongoing commitment to make life more affordable for Canadians, we are eliminating the GST for first-time homebuyers on new homes, ensuring you keep more of your money. This measure is intended to assist individuals entering the housing market for the first time and to encourage builders to increase housing supply.
Individuals can receive 100% GST relief on new homes priced up to $1 million, and partial relief on new homes priced between $1 million and $1.5 million.
The measure will apply to purchases under agreements entered into on or after May 27, 2025 and to owner-built homes where construction begins on or after May 27, 2025.
We know that the housing crisis is real in Vancouver Granville and across Canada. This is one step that we’re taking to increase housing affordability.
Middle Class Tax Cut
Our government is bringing down the cost of living and delivering change across Canada. I will continue to work to increase affordability for my constituents and advocate for solutions that build prosperity while tackling the challenges we face.
We’ve announced a middle class tax cut that will reduce the income tax rate from 15% to 14%.
This change will benefit nearly 22 million Canadians. For 2025, the effective rate will be 14.5% due to the mid-year start, with the full 14% rate applying in 2026.
For a typical two-income family, this could mean savings of up to $840 a year — money that can go toward groceries, bills, and everyday essentials.
The Canada Revenue Agency will update its source deduction tables for the July to December 2025 period so that pay administrators are able to reduce tax withholdings as of July 1. This means that, effective July 1, individuals with employment income and other income subject to source deductions can have tax withheld at 14%. Otherwise, individuals will realize this tax relief when they file their 2025 tax returns in spring 2026.
Canadians called for real action to address the cost of living, and our government is delivering.
Canada Day
On July 1st we gathered to celebrate what it means to be Canadian. We celebrated our greatest strengths: our shared values and our diversity.
From Kerrisdale Community Centre to Sunset Community Centre it was a pleasure to join so many from our community to mark this important Canada Day. Particularly at this moment, Canada Day serves to remind us of how lucky we are to be Canadian, the importance of defending our flag, and ensuring that we put aside our differences to build a stronger Canada.
For many of us, Canada Day was a chance to reflect on how fortunate we are to live in this beautiful country that never stops striving to be better. We must never stop celebrating Canadian’s resilience, solidarity, and our unwavering commitment to being the true North strong and free.
Canada Strong Pass
The Canada Strong Pass is now live running from July 20 to September 2 and it’s your chance to explore British Columbia and beyond, for less.
If indoor experiences are more your style, the pass also provides free or discounted access to top cultural attractions across Canada. Kids 17 and under travel free on VIA Rail when accompanied by an adult, and young adults (18–24) enjoy discounted fares across the country.
You can find more information about Canada Strong Pass here: https://www.canada.ca/en/canadian-heritage/campaigns/canada-pass.html.
Our Relationship with the U.S.
Our relationship with the United States may have its challenges, but friendships will endure. The Canadian government will continue to engage in complex negotiations with the United States in the best interests of Canadian workers and businesses.
On June 26th, I met US Consul General James DeHart, who rightly noted that, “O Canada is a great national anthem for the true North, strong and free”.
As we navigate these difficult times, we must never take for granted our nation’s sovereignty and freedom.
Across the Community
My team and I have been busy meeting and continuing meaningful conversations across VanGran. I’ve had the honour to attend so many amazing events, including the 86th Annual Ceremonial Review of 111 Pegasus Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron, numerous Graduations, and lots of wonderful community celebrations.
All summer, we’ll be out and about, connecting and engaging, so be sure to come and say hi! It’s a privilege to be your MP — and the best part of this job is the wonderful conversations with the amazing folks across Vancouver Granville.
