North Vancouver needs strong, positive, responsible voice

I am a North Vancouverite who cares deeply for his community. I bring experience from the private sector, as a vice president of Vanoc, and have worked in Ottawa. I want to advance the issues my community cares about in the House of Commons.

The Liberal party is focused on helping families, taking care of our environment, supporting small business, creating jobs, and restoring our international reputation—all without raising taxes. Every one of these issues resonate as priorities for North Vancouver.

Liberal candidate liveblogs all-candidates meetings

By Crawford Kilian, The Tyee

While most candidates in the 2011 election are routinely tweeting and posting on Facebook, the North Vancouver Liberal campaign is liveblogging the all-candidates meetings -- a step no other candidates appear to have taken.

Taleeb Noormohamed's live blogs include Monday night's meeting at Mount Seymour United Church and today's late-morning meeting with students at Argyle Secondary.

A quick survey of other B.C. candidates' websites showed nothing similar. Conservative candidates like Deborah Meredith and Irene Yatco tend to have standardized sites. Liberal candidates like Ujjal Dosanjh haven't liveblogged any of their events. Fin Donnelly of the NDP is blogging, and listing all-candidates' meetings but not liveblogging them. The only Green Party blog appears to be Elizabeth May's, last updated on April 12.

Greg Wilson, campaign co-chair for Noormohamed, told The Tyee: "I don't think anybody else in B.C. is liveblogging."

Liberals draw 2,000 to North Van rally

By Crawford Kilian, The Tyee

Liberal organizers themselves seemed surprised by the size of the crowd that came to hear Michael Ignatieff at Sunday's rally in North Vancouver. They estimated a thousand people were jamm the ballroom of the Pinnacle Hotel in Lower Lonsdale, and another thousand filled the lobby and a nearby corridor.

Taleeb Noormohamed, the Liberal candidate in North Vancouver, spoke with the crowd before Ignatieff's arrival. He asked: "How many people here have voted for a party other than Liberal before?" At least a third of the listeners in the ballroom raised their hands. "You're more than welcome to stay," Noormohamed responded.

When Ignatieff entered the room 40 minutes late, he seemed equally impressed. "What a sight! This is more than Edmonton," he said. "This is Canada. Canada is in the room." After getting a laugh from a remark in French, he said: "There's a lot of French immersion in North Vancouver," and went back into French to say: "They speak French in Vancouver!"

The Liberal leader, in a blue shirt and khaki chinos, made a point of commenting that "Everyone is welcome" in a Liberal meeting, and attacked Stephen Harper for "Selling fear from one end of the country to the other" -- including Harper's appeal today for a majority so he could deal with a sovereignist Quebec.

Ignatieff waved the Liberal Red Book and hit some key elements in it: the "learning passport" for post-secondary, support for daycare and early childhood education, subsidies to help retrofit homes for energy efficiency. He got applause and a burst of thundersticks when he asked: "Where did Canada go on the world stage? We have got to get back in the world as a country of peace, order and good government. We're the most international society in the world, and it's one of our glories. A citizen of Canada is a citizen of the world."

Liberals and Conservatives battle for North Vancouver

Thursday, April 14, 2011
By Tracy Sherlock, Vancouver Sun

Conservative MP Andrew Saxton beat Liberal incumbent Don Bell by just 2,820 votes in the last election, but new Liberal candidate Taleeb Noormohamed thinks he can overcome that difference this time around.

It looks like it will be a two-way race between the Liberals and the Conservatives in North Vancouver, a riding that has swung between the former Alliance, the Liberals and the Conservatives in the past decade.

North Vancouver is made up of villages like Deep Cove, Lynn Valley and Lower Lonsdale, all set between the mountains and the sea. It's an affluent community, with a median family income of $80,185 compared to the provincial average median family income of $65,787.

Saxton told The Sun that the economy and jobs are the most important issues facing North Vancouver this time around, while Noormohamed said social issues for seniors and young families are paramount.

In 2008, Saxton won the seat with 42.3 per cent of the vote, while Bell had 37.4 per cent. The Greens' Jim Stephenson was third with 10.7 per cent and the NDP's Michael Charrois had 9.4 per cent.

This time around, after failing to secure the Liberal nomination, Stephenson is backing Noormohamed, and new candidate Greg Dowman is representing the Green party.

2. Have you ever felt like not voting in an election and why?
3. If you could travel in a time machine, where would you go?
